Whether it’s deep creases in the forehead, tiny crow’s feet around the eyes, or sagging cheeks and jowls, one of the most common aesthetic goals of the many men and women who come to me seeking cosmetic surgery is relief from the various signs of facial aging. These natural changes in the face can make us look much older than we feel and may even interfere with career advancement or a satisfying social life. Because there are so many different treatment options out there, it can often be difficult to choose which one might be right for you. Specifically, many patients ask me whether non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments or facial plastic surgery procedures will ultimately give them the best results. The answer can actually be much more complicated than people might think.
For patients who require a quick and comparatively hassle-free solution to certain specific signs of facial aging, non-surgical treatment options can be extremely effective. Injectable treatments, like Botox® or various facial fillers can smooth away the lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement or restore lost volume to a face that has started to look sunken or gaunt. Chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing treatments can gently remove layers of dead skin cells that dull the complexion and make wrinkles more noticeable. These treatments can usually be completed in a single office visit and require virtually no recovery time. However, the results are only temporary and so regular maintenance is necessary in order to preserve your results.
Cosmetic Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures
From the surgical facelift that addresses signs of aging across the entire face to highly-specialized procedures like eyelid surgery or neck lifts that target only specific areas of concern, cosmetic facial plastic surgery can accomplish a great deal. Years of experience as a board certified plastic surgeon and the most advanced surgical technology make it possible for me to consistently achieve subtle, natural-looking results that do not look “overdone” or obviously artificial. All of these procedures do, of course, require that a patient go through surgery and a post-surgical recovery period, but facial plastic surgery results can generally, with proper care and upkeep, last a lifetime.
The Best Choice: Combine Both!
In the more than twenty-five years that I have been helping men and women fight the signs of facial aging, it has become my facial rejuvenation philosophy that the best outcomes usually occur when patients adopt a gradual approach, beginning their treatment plans earlier in the aging process and only undergoing more comprehensive, surgical procedures as they become necessary. For example, a patient may begin their facial rejuvenation treatment plan in their early thirties with subtle, non-surgical options. Then, depending on the degree of wrinkling, skin laxity, or fatty deposits, they may move on to selective minor surgical procedures. Finally, more extensive facial plastic surgery procedures may eventually become necessary to maintain a revitalized but natural appearance. Even after a cosmetic surgery procedure, minimally invasive facial rejuvenation treatments are often necessary in order to keep you looking your best.
