There is a common misconception among people that plastic surgery procedures, particularly those designed to address some of the many signs of facial aging, are really only suitable for women. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, nearly 60% of the more than 200,000 cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed on men in 2015 were specifically for the face and neck. As people come to live healthier lifestyles, more men have sought out ways to look as young and healthy as they feel, and as stigmas around plastic surgery fade away more men have come to embrace the benefits of plastic surgery. With Father’s Day just around the corner, we thought it might be fitting to put some of these old stereotypes to rest by going over the top five most popular facial plastic surgery procedures for men.
Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is designed to reduce the appearance of protruding ears, usually caused by a missing fold of cartilage, or to correct the appearance of ears that have been misshapen by accidental trauma or disease. Nearly 10,000 otoplasty procedures were performed in 2015 on male patients ranging from young children to adults, accounting for nearly 5% of all male plastic surgery procedures.
#4: Facelift Surgery
Nearly 12,000 (almost 6%) of the cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed on men in 2015 were facelifts. By removing excess, sagging skin, repositioning facial tissue, and re-tightening underlying facial muscles that have started to grow slack over the years, I can help give the face a more youthful look without over-tightening the skin or creating an obviously “worked on” appearance. Subtlety and experience are the keys to achieving the most natural looking mini-facelift or facelift results.
#3: Facial Contouring
Facial contouring procedures include a variety of surgical techniques used to enhance or restore the symmetry of the face by augmenting or minimizing key facial features. This can include anything from cheek implants to chin augmentation (genioplasty) surgery. I have found that using natural materials like cartilage, bone, or fat taken from the patient’s own body allows me to safely and effectively achieve exceptionally natural-looking results.
#2: Eyelid Surgery
Nearly 30,000 men chose to undergo blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, procedures in 2015, which accounts for more than 14% of the total procedures performed. Eyelid surgery removes excess fat and skin from the eyelids while tightening the tiny muscles around the eyes to improve the look of sagging eyebrows, under eye bags, and drooping eyelids, subtly rejuvenating the patient’s overall appearance.
#1: Nose Surgery
More than one fourth of all the cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed on men in 2015 were rhinoplasties, otherwise known as nose surgery. One of the reasons for the popularity of this procedure is its versatility. Male rhinoplasty can correct breathing difficulties, reconstruct damage caused by trauma, or simply improve the balance of the facial features and overall facial aesthetics.
