The Importance of Maintenance after Facial Plastic Surgery

There are many misconceptions out there about plastic surgery, but perhaps the most dangerous is the idea that it can magically achieve instant and permanent results.  I always try to caution my patients that even though the facial plastic surgery procedures that I perform can achieve results that will potentially last for many years, nothing can stop the aging process altogether.  Environmental factors like gravity, ultraviolet radiation, or atmospheric pollutants can all gradually affect the appearance of the face by shifting fat deposits and damaging the surface of the skin.  Not only do these factors, along with the natural effects of the aging process, contribute to the various signs of facial aging, they can also adversely affect the results of a previous plastic surgery procedure, making the final outcome less satisfactory.  This is why I advise my patients to follow a long-term facial rejuvenation maintenance plan that we customize to their individual needs.  This is the best way that I know to help optimize your cosmetic plastic surgery results and keep looking youthful and vital for as long as possible.

The Importance of Maintenance after Facial Plastic SurgerySkin Resurfacing to Remove Environmental Damage

Even the most artfully performed brow lift or face lift procedure will look unnatural if the skin looks old, but exposure to ultraviolet light and atmospheric pollutants can leave the surface of the skin wrinkled, cracked, and discolored.  Chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing treatments work by removing the dead and damaged skin cells that make up the outermost layers of the epidermis, smoothing out the skin’s surface and exposing the newly formed and more youthful looking skin that lies underneath.

Facial Injectable Treatments to Reduce Wrinkles

Facial wrinkles are generally the result of two ongoing processes: repeated facial movements creasing the skin (causing dynamic expression lines) and the gradual loss of facial fat volume (causing static facial lines).  Botox® injectable treatments temporarily decrease the muscle movement that causes expression lines to form, softening the appearance of the area, while facial fillers like Juvéderm® use hyaluronic acid (a substance that occurs naturally in young, healthy skin) to restore facial volume and smooth static lines.  Not only do these wrinkle treatments make facial wrinkles less apparent, they also effectively “press pause” on the aging clock, maintaining the face’s youthful appearance and often postponing the point at which more extensive plastic surgery procedures might become necessary.

Every face is different, and even different areas on the same face can often age at different rates, so the proper combination and timing of individual maintenance treatments will vary from patient to patient.  When you come in for a facial rejuvenation consultation, we can discuss your medical history and daily activities in detail and I will carefully examine your skin tone and facial features so that we can determine together an approach that will work best for you.  If you are interested in learning more about any of the cosmetic plastic surgery procedures that I perform, or about your own anti-aging options, please feel free to contact me, Dr. Fernando Burstein, to schedule an appointment or connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ for the latest facial plastic surgery news and updates.
