When people hear the phrase “plastic surgery,” among the first images to come to mind are the many celebrities who have chosen to undergo facelift surgery over the years, and with more than 131,000 performed in 2016 alone, facelifts have long been one of the most frequently performed cosmetic facial plastic surgery procedures. In this month’s “Spotlight Procedure” blog, I will provide some insight into facelifts and mini-facelifts; two procedures that can address multiple signs of facial aging and help women and men maintain a healthy and youthful appearance.
A traditional facelift, or rhytidectomy, is specifically designed to improve the visible signs of aging that can affect the face and neck. These signs may include: an overall sagging or drooping of the skin, a deepening of the fold lines between the nose and the corner of the mouth, loose skin and excess fat in the lower face and neck that causes the appearance of jowls or a double chin, and a general loss of the fullness that gives the face a youthful and healthy look.
Who are suitable candidates for a Facelift?
A facelift can potentially benefit any woman or man who has started to notice general signs of aging in the mid- and lower face. Although it is most commonly performed on patients in their fifties or sixties, the progression of the aging process can vary significantly between individuals. Younger patients who are only beginning to notice the earliest signs of facial aging often opt for a partial or mini-facelift, a less invasive procedure that focuses only on the region of the face between the top of the cheek bones to the jaw line.
How is a Facelift Performed?
Many people mistakenly believe that a facelift works by stretching the skin backward, but this approach will only achieve a vey unnatural looking, “windblown” look. Most of the signs of facial aging are caused by gravity, so a successful facelift really requires a subtle lifting of the underlying facial muscles and tissues. I also use fat transfer techniques to help give the face more a youthful and healthy appearance.
Even though a facelift can achieve some truly impressive results, it is not necessarily the right procedure for everyone. Each face ages differently, and specific regions of the same face can even age at different rates, so I always recommend that my patients sit with me for a full consultation where we can go over their individual areas of concern and arrive at a facial rejuvenation plan that will give them the longest lasting and most natural looking results. We can even view computer-simulated images of your potential results.
