Options for Getting Rid of a Double Chin

balanced profileThe appearance of a double chin can make people appear older and heavier than they actually are. Over time and with age, the skin loses elasticity and doesn’t snap back into position like it once did. Additionally, the effects of weight loss and gain can also contribute to sagging skin beneath the chin. Whatever the cause, many people with double chins are continually searching for an exercise or treatment to diminish the appearance of the “waddle.” Dr. Fernando Burstein offers facial treatments to reduce sagging skin and tighten muscles beneath the chin.

For patients who are bothered by a small amount of lax neck skin but do not need plastic surgery yet, Ultherapy® non-surgical skin tightening can successfully tighten and lift loose skin. As we age, the body’s ability to produce collagen slows. By using ultrasound technology, Ultherapy® heats up the tissues, strengthening the skin from within and stimulating collagen production. While Ultherapy® is great for sagging neck skin, it also works to lift and tighten skin around the eyes, brow, and across the mid section of the face. Ultherapy® results are gradual; most patients notice full results within 2 to 3 months after their treatment.  Although some patients experience redness following treatment, there is no downtime associated with this procedure.

Patients with a more significant double chin may opt for neck lift surgery. Neck lift surgery is as unique as each patient, but typically consists of tightening loose, sagging skin and muscles as well as using liposuction to remove excess fat. Patients who receive neck lift surgery can usually return to their regular daily activities within two weeks, although strenuous activities should be postponed for at least three weeks following the procedure. Depending on the patient’s needs, neck lift surgery may be combined with other facial procedures like facelift or brow lift for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Some patients are bothered by other chin issues like a chin that is too small. Sometimes a small chin can contribute to the appearance of a double chin. Dr. Burstein uses techniques similar to that of neck lift surgery along with genioplasty (chin surgery) to enhance facial contour and neck aesthetics. Genioplasty can be performed to augment or reduce the size of the chin to add balance to the face. Rather than using synthetic chin implants, Dr. Burstein prefers to use the patient’s existing bone and tissues for enhancement and uses neck lift techniques like liposuction beneath the chin to further add definition.
