As discussed in a previous plastic surgery blog, facial cosmetic procedures have shown a substantial increase as more patients request anti-aging treatments to eliminate wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, and sagging skin. Double board certified in plastic surgery and otolaryngology (head and neck surgery), Dr. Fernando Burstein performs a wide range of both surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Burstein answers a few frequently asked questions about facial cosmetic procedures to help educate patients on the available treatments that restore a refreshed, youthful appearance.
Is there a procedure to eliminate loose skin on my neck?
Neck lift surgery addresses the lower third of the face to remove excess skin and fat that contribute to a “double chin” or “turkey waddle” appearance. During neck lift surgery, neck muscles (platismal bands) are tightened and lifted to reduce sagging and if necessary, excess fat is removed through liposuction.
Are facelifts my only option to eliminate wrinkles and sagging facial skin?
There are many surgical and non-surgical anti-aging options to target wrinkles and lax skin. While a facelift provides overall rejuvenation, “mini facelift” procedures are also available to target specific areas and concerns. For example, if a patient is only concerned about furrows and wrinkles on the forehead and brow area, then an upper facelift can address that area. Non-surgical treatments such as Ultherapy® or Matrix® radio frequency skin tightening technologies or Botox® and facial fillers can also provide effective facial rejuvenation results.
Can I use Botox® for wrinkles on my cheeks and lip area?
No, Botox® can only be administered to the upper third of the face in areas including the forehead, brows, and eye area. However, we also offer facial fillers as anti-aging injectable treatments. Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Perlane® can fill areas of lost volume and smooth wrinkles and furrows in the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and mouth. These results typically last for the same duration or longer as Botox®.
Are there treatments available for surface skin conditions that form as we age such as acne, scars, and sun spots?
Yes, chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing are minimally invasive anti-aging treatments that even skin tone and eliminate skin imperfections while also reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Chemical peels safely exfoliate dead, damaged skin cells and encourage collagen re-growth for healthy, new cells to replace them. At my Atlanta practice, I also provide Sciton® Erbium laser treatments to treat a wide range of skin conditions. The Sciton® Erbium laser allows customizable treatment levels so patients of all ages and skin types can choose the level and number of treatments. Both of these procedures can be performed in-office or in the operating room during surgery.
