A common concern among many patients pursuing facial plastic surgery is achieving natural-looking results that rejuvenate their appearance without an overly dramatic change. Recent media reports have discussed patients choosing combination surgeries to improve aesthetic balance, reduce overall patient costs, and avoid revisionary plastic surgery and extra recovery time. The most recent study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery shows combined genioplasty (chin surgery) and rhinoplasty (nose surgery) produces natural, subtle results with a high satisfaction rate. With over 20 years of experience performing facial cosmetic procedures, double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Fernando Burstein discusses how these procedures complement each other for natural, proportionate results.
In the study, researchers from the University of Verona, Italy, followed 90 patients who underwent combination chin and nose surgery between 2002 and 2004. After three years of follow-up, researchers found that more than half reported no negative changes and were satisfied with their results. Rhinoplasty can achieve positive results alone but like many of our spotlight patients, nose surgery can be combined with procedures like blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) or facelift surgery. After an in-person consultation with a patient, Dr. Burstein understands their aesthetic goals and determines a treatment plan to address each one.
Genioplasty techniques used in the study included chin implants and repositioning the patient’s bone, however, the results from utilizing the patient’s own bone actually showed more stable, long-term results. Dr. Burstein chooses this technique over facial implants as a more natural option to augment the chin. By using materials from the patient’s own body rather than a foreign substance, post-operative risks can be minimized. To further improve results, patients often choose minimally invasive treatments such as a chemical peel or laser skin resurfacing to smooth skin tone and reduce the appearance of scars.
For the most natural looking results, it is very important to find a board certified plastic surgeon with ample experience performing the procedures you’re seeking.
