As a board certified plastic surgeon and otolaryngologist (head and neck surgeon) with more than twenty-five years of practical experience treating men and women of all ages, I am intimately familiar with a wide variety of surgical and non-surgical techniques that are specifically designed to address the various signs of facial aging. One such procedure that has become quite popular is the mini-facelift. Unlike a traditional full facelift, a mini-facelift targets only the bottom third of the face, reducing minor sagging of the skin around the cheeks, jawline and neck. However, even though more limited in scope, a mini-facelift can provide a number of distinct advantages over a full facelift procedure.
Any time the delicate tissues of the face are cut or manipulated, some degree of bruising and discomfort will occur. However, because a mini-facelift addresses a smaller area than a full facelift, it is performed using only a handful of tiny incisions that can be easily concealed behind the ear. Fewer and smaller incisions generally mean that there is less post-operative discomfort and a lower risk for facial scarring or other complications while reduced manipulation of the underlying facial muscles means that most patients experience less bruising while recovering from the procedure. Because a mini-facelift is less invasive and time-consuming than a full facelift procedure, and usually requires less overall time in the hospital, it tends to be more affordable as well.
Faster Recovery Time
After a full facelift, patients usually require at least two weeks before the bruising subsides and the results start to become evident, and some may potentially take even longer than that to fully recover. However, after a mini-facelift, patients whose job does not require strenuous activity can generally return to work just a few days after their sutures are removed and many start to notice results almost immediately. Although the effects of a mini-facelift are not as long-lasting as those of a full facelift procedure, typically lasting between five and ten years, the procedure is ideal for those who would like to look younger and more vital, but who cannot afford the prolonged post-surgical downtime associated with a full facelift.
Not all faces age at the same rate, and not all areas of the same face start to exhibit the signs of aging at the same time. It has long been my facial rejuvenation philosophy that using subtle procedures to specifically target only those areas that require attention, and performing those procedures gradually over the entire aging process, can ultimately achieve far more aesthetically pleasing and natural-looking plastic surgery results. Procedures like the mini-facelift, brow lift, and neck lift are integral parts of this individually customized approach.
