In the more than twenty-five years that I have been treating both adults and children as a board-certified plastic surgeon and otolaryngologist, I have made every possible effort to deliver consistently exceptional, long-lasting results, regardless of whether a patient is undergoing a cosmetic procedure or a more extensive reconstructive one. However, it is important to remember that all faces change over time. As we grow older, the tissues, muscles, and ligaments of the face can all grow, sag, or shift. Not only does this natural process contribute to the various signs of facial aging, but it can also distort the results of a previous plastic surgery procedure, making the final outcome much less satisfactory. This is just one of the many reasons I often encourage my patients to undergo periodic non-surgical or minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation procedures to help maintain their plastic surgery results. It has always been my philosophy of facial aging that making gradual, subtle improvements over time is the most efficient way to achieve the best possible outcomes.
There are many different ways that relatively quick and easy facial rejuvenation procedures can help prolong plastic surgery results. For example, a full or mini-facelift procedure can create a more youthful appearance by eliminating wrinkles and folds across the entire face. However, as the skin grows older, collagen production lessens, reducing elasticity and making it more difficult for the underlying facial musculature to prevent the skin from sagging. A chemical peel or laser skin resurfacing treatment not only improves the outward appearance of the skin, but also stimulates natural collagen production, keeping the skin refreshed and resilient. Similarly, even though a brow lift or forehead lift can effectively “turn back the clock” by alleviating sagging in the eyebrows and forehead region, it cannot prevent further aging from occurring. Repeated facial movements often create frown lines between the eyebrows or crow’s feet around the corners of the eyes that make the face appear much older than it is. A brief, fifteen minute Botox® treatment can relax the facial muscles responsible for the creation of these lines, smoothing their appearance and helping to preserve the overall appearance of the entire upper face.
Many of my patients have found that maintenance procedures, because they make only very minor alterations, often achieve a more natural-looking result. Their friends and relatives comment that they look refreshed and even more youthful, but cannot tell that they have had any additional work done. These techniques effectively “press the pause button” on the aging process, temporarily preventing lines and wrinkles from forming and delaying the point at which other, more extensive facial cosmetic plastic surgery may become necessary without the need for extensive post-surgical recovery time. Every patient is unique, and so I take a custom approach to every case, working closely with the patient to determine their specific needs.
