Facial cosmetic procedures treat various areas of the face that show the signs of aging from forehead furrows to fine lines that appear on the chin. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Burstein is double board certified in plastic surgery and otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) and often hears descriptions such as “crow’s feet” or “smile lines” used to discuss wrinkles and other areas of concern. Since wrinkles and fine lines can appear almost anywhere on the face, Dr. Fernando Burstein defines common terms that reference specific areas of concern.
Due to age, gravity, and repeated facial expressions, patients develop fine lines on the forehead, brows, and eye area. Canthal lines, also known as “crow’s feet,” are thin lines that develop at the sides of the eyes in the periorbital areas. “Frown lines,” which actually allude to the upper portion of the face, refer to glabellar lines that form vertical furrows between the eyes. Dr. Burstein performs facelift surgery and offers cosmetic injectables such as Botox® and Dysport® to address these areas. Facelift surgery removes excess, sagging skin and retightens skin for a smooth, youthful result while Botox® and Dysport® are non-surgical treatments that temporarily relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles and furrows. Similar to a facelift, brow lift surgery smooths furrows and tightens skin and muscles on the forehead and brow area where horizontal furrows, or “worry lines,” appear across the forehead.
Other common areas that develop noticeable signs of aging include the cheeks, mouth, and neck. Marionette lines (smile lines) appear laterally on the outer edges of the chin. These lines, along with noticeable nasolabial folds, can be addressed with mini facelifts that directly target the mid-facial area or minimally invasive facial fillers. Facial fillers such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Perlane® restore areas of lost volume and smooth out wrinkles.
Jowls and “turkey waddles” can appear on the lower third of the face where sagging skin forms. To address drooping skin, Dr. Burstein can remove excess skin and tighten muscles through neck lift surgery. Depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals, Dr. Burstein may also use neck liposuction to remove excess fat contributing to the “turkey waddle.” As a non-surgical alternative, Dr. Burstein also offers Ultherapy® skin tightening, which targets areas of lax skin with ultrasound technology to heat skin cells and stimulate collagen growth.
