Over time, skin and muscle tissue can lose elasticity and tightness. Additionally, the loss of a significant amount of weight, whether through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery, may leave behind skin that has been stretched and loosened. In either case, the results can be slackened jowls that sag and fold beneath the cheeks or loose skin that hangs below the neck and creates the appearance of a “double chin” or even “turkey waddle.” There are a number of different cosmetic surgery procedures that can address concerns in this area, and I make it a point to carefully consider both the physical factors and the goals of all my Atlanta plastic surgery patients in order to determine which option is best for their individual needs.
For patients who are only beginning to exhibit signs of facial aging in the lower face, I offer Ultherapy® skin tightening treatment. Ultherapy® uses high frequency sound waves to stimulate and gently warm the deep dermal tissue without disturbing the surface skin. This stimulation activates the body’s natural healing process and encourages the production of collagen, temporarily restoring the skin’s natural elasticity and volume. With a short 15 to 30 minute treatment, Ultherapy® skin tightening can help alleviate the appearance of sagging skin for several months at a time.
For patients interested in more dramatic and long-lasting results, but who feel that they are not ready for a full facelift because the upper face is still relatively young looking, a neck lift procedure may be ideal. By making small, easily hidden incisions under the chin and around the ears, I can tighten the muscles of the neck, remove excess fat via liposuction, and eliminate excess skin to create a more slim and youthful facial profile. The lower face and neck areas are often among the first few areas to show signs of aging, and by addressing those signs early we are often able to postpone the need for more comprehensive surgical facial rejuvenation procedures.
Even more significant contouring to the profile can be achieved through chin surgery, or genioplasty. Through subtle revisions to the size and shape of the chin, other facial features, such as the nose or brows, can be magnified or minimized, giving the face a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance. While a chin may be augmented with the use of an artificial chin implant, I prefer, wherever possible, to use bone or cartilage from the patient’s own body in augmentation so as to avoid allergic reaction, surgical rejection, and the risk of post-operative infection.
