Over the past two decades, as plastic surgery has moved into the main stream for women, it has also become more socially acceptable for men. More and more, looking young and vital has become a key factor in determining career success and many of my male patients, men who are at the top of their careers who feel young and confident, are worried they look much older than they feel. Many of these men have found that cosmetic plastic surgery procedures can give them a competitive edge in the workplace by helping them look more vital and feel more confident. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), men now account for almost 10% of all cosmetic procedures performed in the US, an overall increase of 22% since 2000.
One of the primary concerns for professional men seeking plastic surgery is the downtime. In many cases, they seek subtle, minimally invasive treatments that will smooth lines and wrinkles or improve overall skin tone without the need to take time off of work. Botox® cosmetic injections, designed to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes, have seen a 310% rise in popularity among men since 2000. Specifically, Botox® can help to relax the frown lines that often occur between the brows, which many men complain make them appear angry and contentious. Moreover, facial fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® (up 13% in just the last year) can help restore volume to facial features that have become slackened and sagging with age.
In addition, some men find that certain specifically targeted facial contouring procedures can also contribute to their success in the workplace. Many believe that a strong, well-defined jaw line projects the appearance of authority and decisiveness. Jaw-line recontouring, which augments or shapes the existing bones of the jaw, can help create a more desirable facial profile. Similarly genioplasty, or chin augmentation surgery, sculpts the chin to bring it into harmonious proportion with the rest of the facial features and is actually the only facial procedure where men make up the majority of patients (51% according to ASPS).
Finally, the use of high definition video conferencing has increased the amount of close-up face-to-face interaction over the course of a regular business day. As a result, the areas around the eyes have become areas of concern. Sagging eyelids and puffy bags under the eyes can create the appearance of sleepiness or disinterest. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, has become increasingly popular among men who want to keep their eyes looking vital and alert.
