One of the things that patients who are planning to undergo facial plastic surgery worry most about is the possibility of post-surgical scarring. All surgeons diligently try to avoid leaving any unsightly scars, no matter what the specific purpose of the surgery may be. However, since cosmetic facial plastic surgery procedures are specifically focused on improving the appearance, and because the face cannot be easily covered up with clothing, the need to keep any scarring to an absolute minimum is paramount. Fortunately, there are three specific ways that modern facial plastic surgery procedures can help to minimize the possibility of post-surgical scarring.
Specifically Focused Procedures
Decades ago, when patients were interested in alleviating the signs of facial aging, their best option was a full facelift. This comprehensive plastic surgery procedure could eliminate wrinkles and folds across the entire face by removing excess, sagging skin while lifting and tightening the underlying facial muscles and tissues. Today, however, we understand that different regions of the face age at different rates and that better results can often be achieved by using more narrowly-focused procedures that only address the patient’s personal areas of concern. Smaller scale procedures like the mini-facelift or neck lift require fewer and smaller incisions than more extensive techniques and so leave behind fewer and smaller scars that can more easily be concealed.
Advanced Surgical Techniques
Advancements in surgical technique and technology have made it possible to achieve significant but subtle changes through incisions that are all but invisible to the naked eye. One technique, called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, involves removing tiny amounts of excess skin and fat from beneath the eyes through a small incision inside the lower eyelid. This improves the appearance of under eye bags and drooping eyelids while leaving no external scars. Furthermore, the upper third of the face can be made to look smoother and younger with an advanced “keyhole” technique which uses only a thin tube fitted with a camera and special instruments. This endoscopic brow lift can achieve results that are similar to a traditional brow lift with fewer incisions, less noticeable scars, and a significantly reduced recovery time.
Post-Surgical Skin Resurfacing Treatments
Finally, after a cosmetic facial plastic surgery procedure has been completed, there are a variety of techniques that can be used to smooth and even out the skin tone and minimize the appearance of any scars that may be left behind. Chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing treatments work by gently removing the outermost layers of the skin, which are made up mostly of dead and damaged skin cells. This reveals the newer, younger looking skin that lies beneath and encourages the body’s own natural collagen production and healing process. This helps pre-existing and surgical scars fade faster while giving the entire face a soft and youthful glow.
