As a professional film maker, videographer, and former TV news anchor, Donna spends a lot of time in front of the camera, and so she became understandably concerned when she started to notice some of the early signs of facial aging. She wanted to continue to look as young and as vital as she felt, and to avoid having to worry about using filters and special effects to camouflage her minor flaws and wrinkles in her films. That decision ultimately brought her to board certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Fernando Burstein.
“The key to a successful facelift,” explains Dr. Burstein, “is to help patients look like a younger and more relaxed version of themselves, not like some stretched and airbrushed person that they can’t even recognize. We want to avoid an overdone look, with lips that are unnaturally full or an absolute lack of expression in the face that is characteristic of a poor facelift. To do that, we have to restore youthful volume and fullness by replacing fat that has been lost over time and lift the facial features in the same way that they descended in the first place. Gravity is pretty much vertical, so pulling things back horizontally provides very unnatural looking results. Overall, I would prefer to leave a few imperfections that may camouflage what we have done rather than have everything look plastic and artificial.”
When Donna first came to see Dr. Burstein, she believed that she was too young to even consider a full facelift procedure. However, as Dr. Burstein explains, there can be several advantages to initiating plastic surgery procedures earlier in the aging process. “Every patient is unique, and no two faces age in precisely the same way. My philosophy is that minor procedures, done incrementally over the years, can keep the face looking balanced and congruous while avoiding the major, dramatic changes that look unnatural and make it obvious to everyone that plastic surgery has been done.”
Donna plans to use her experience as a professional videographer to document her facelift procedure from start to finish. She even joked with her husband, checking if he was “okay with me showing my mug to the world.” You can follow her entire journey on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ in the coming weeks.
