An expert in facial aesthetics, Dr. Fernando Burstein is a well-respected Atlanta facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Not only is Dr. Burstein board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery, but he also holds a board certification in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery). Although Dr. Burstein is recognized for his exceptional surgical skills and training with procedures like rhinoplasty (nose surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and facelift surgery, he is known for his concern for his patients’ overall wellbeing, guiding them from the initial consultation through plastic surgery recovery.
Dr. Burstein graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School with a degree in plastic and reconstructive surgery and then went on to train in general surgery and otolaryngology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and complete his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Yale. After completing an advanced fellowship in craniofacial surgery at UCLA, Dr. Burstein joined the Atlanta Plastic Surgery team in 1989. That same year Dr. Burstein was named director of the Center for Craniofacial Disorders at CHOA where he continues to hold the distinction. From 1991 to 2001, Dr. Burstein served as the Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) at Scottish Rite.
On numerous occasions Dr. Burstein has been recognized as not only a top doctor in the Atlanta area, but he’s also been recognized as a top physician nationwide. His expertise in the contours of the face allows him to produce remarkable cosmetic surgery results and extraordinary reconstructive outcomes for pediatric and adult facial reconstruction patients. In fact, he served as president of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2006 and is currently a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also holds memberships with the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dedicated to teaching young surgeons and helping others, Dr. Burstein holds operating privileges at Northside Hospital and CHOA at Scottish Rite. He also holds an academic appointment at Emory University as a clinical professor.
Dr. Burstein’s love for learning has led him to author and publish, over 100 articles and book chapters on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery so that other surgeons and patients can learn about plastic surgery technology and cosmetic and reconstructive surgery techniques. A native of Santiago, Chile, Dr. Burstein lives in Atlanta with his wife, Dr. Kathleen Johnson, and two children. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, mountain climbing, cycling, heliskiing, as well as traveling with his family.
