Double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Fernando Burstein has been practicing facial reconstructive and cosmetic surgery for over 25 years. In part one of this facial rejuvenation series, Dr. Burstein explains his approach to facial rejuvenation, outlining his overall philosophy, summarizing the general course of treatments, and detailing the components of facial aging and the methods for combating them.
It is my belief that although facial aging is inevitable, it can be managed through the gradual and skillful application of a combination of non-surgical and surgical treatment options. Simply put, regardless of the age of a patient, starting treatment plans earlier in the aging process and then gradually working up to more comprehensive treatments later on (if necessary) can produce optimal outcomes. Moreover, the best results are possible only when physician and patient work together to determine the patient’s final aesthetic goals. When factors of history and lifestyle are taken into careful consideration, and when all the components of facial aging (skin damage, laxity, and loss of volume) are addressed with this long term, graduated approach, maintaining youthful and healthy skin throughout the ages is possible.
This philosophy has been the driving force behind the design of my practice. I have created a tight-knit team of nurse practitioners, aestheticians, and coordinators who work together with me to tailor an individualized treatment plan for each patient. My team and I strive to provide our patients with the safest, most natural, and effective treatments suited to their unique hereditary traits, skin tone, and texture. It is my hope that by maintaining an open line of communication throughout each patient’s gradual, variable treatment approach, we can achieve a natural, vital appearance that enhances each patient’s best features.
At my Atlanta plastic surgery practice, there is no such thing as a “typical treatment.” Every patient’s genetic makeup requires specific considerations when approaching a beneficial treatment plan. While each patient’s individual treatment plan specifics will vary, in every case I strive to approach planning as an ongoing process, implemented at various life stages according to the patients’ needs and desires. Patients who begin their facial rejuvenation treatment plan in their early twenties and into their thirties may want to start with subtle, non-surgical treatment options, such as anti-aging skin care products, facial fillers, ultrasonic skin tightening, and Botox®. Depending on the degree of wrinkling, skin laxity, or fatty deposits, we may later move on to selective minor surgical procedures such as facial liposuction or skin resurfacing. Even these minimally invasive procedures can help keep a patient looking fresh, young, and vital well into their 40’s. Ultimately, depending on how a patient ages, more extensive procedures (such as eyelid and brow surgery, neck or face lift) may be appropriate to maintain a revitalized but natural appearance into a patient’s 50’s and even 70’s and upward. The main goal is to evaluate your facial structure and features during your varying stages of aging and combine the most beneficial treatments to not only address pre-existing and current concerns head-on, but also minimize the need for more aggressive treatments in the future.
Everyone ages differently and deserves a customized treatment plan that provides the best long term results.
