Double board-certified plastic surgeon and otolaryngologist Dr. Fernando Burstein has spent a lifetime performing cosmetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery procedures ranging from cleft lip and palate repair to aesthetic rhinoplasty and even ear surgery on men and women of all ages. In our ongoing blog feature, Ask Dr. Burstein, we will have the opportunity to hear him answer some of the most frequently asked questions he receives about facial plastic surgery.
QUESTION: I am a 46 year old working mother of two, and I have recently started to notice that my face is beginning to look older. Specifically, I am concerned with the deepening lines and wrinkles that are starting to form on my forehead and between my eyes. The rest of my face still seems relatively young-looking for my age, so I do not think that I am ready to undergo a full facelift, and I have tried facial injectable cosmetic treatments, like Botox®, but I don’t like that it’s only a temporary fix. Are there any cosmetic facial plastic surgery procedures that will target only those areas where I need work and provide longer lasting results?
ANSWER: Certainly! It has long been my philosophy that facial aging is best managed through the gradual and skillful application of a combination of non-surgical and surgical cosmetic treatments. Decades ago, the traditional full facelift was the common “go-to” procedure for the treatment of facial aging, but it could leave faces looking unnaturally stretched or pulled. As techniques and technology have progressed and we have come to develop a better understanding of exactly how facial aging occurs, plastic surgeons have developed a variety of precision surgical procedures that are specifically designed to address only a patient’s individual areas of concern. For example, a blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery) can remove excess fat and skin while tightening the muscles around the eyes to improve the look of sagging eyebrows, under eye bags, and drooping eyelids, and a brow lift can reshape and smooth the forehead and area between the brows to minimize the appearance of deep forehead wrinkles, frown lines, brow furrows, and sagging eyebrows. Based on what you have said, I would think that either could potentially address your concerns without affecting other regions of the face, giving you the look you want with less post-surgical recovery time. Every patient is unique, and so I would need to examine you in person so that we can develop a customized treatment plan focused specifically on your needs that will achieve long-lasting, natural looking facial plastic surgery results.
