When you read about plastic surgery procedures, it is easy to start thinking of the face as a collection of extremely specific areas of concern, each with their own individual issues and modes of treatment. However, the best facial plastic surgery results are usually the outcome of approaching the face holistically, seeing all of the individual pieces as complementary parts of a unified whole. Stepping back and looking at this wider perspective allows us to see how the results of some cosmetic plastic surgery procedures of the face can be significantly enhanced by pairing them with other procedures. In addition, performing combined procedures together can often substantially reduce not only the overall cost, but also the amount of time one may have to spend recovering from those procedures.
Surgery of the Nose and Facial Balance
Many are interested in modifying the shape or size of the nose. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, was the cosmetic facial surgery procedure most commonly performed in 2013. But when considering rhinoplasty, it is important to consider the balance of the other facial features, particularly the nose and cheeks, and how they contribute to a balanced and aesthetically unified whole. In my practice, I have achieved truly exceptional nasal reconstruction results by pairing the procedure with genioplasty, or chin augmentation surgery. In some cases, a nose that the patient finds uncomfortably large, for example, can be deemphasized and balanced with a strong, projecting chin. Combining these procedures allows me to create an elegantly sculpted facial profile without reducing the size of the nose so much that it seems disproportionate or obstructs breathing.
Eyelid Surgery with Sagging Brows
With over 216,000 procedures performed in 2013, blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery to alleviate sagging skin or under-eye bags, has become nearly as popular as rhinoplasty. Typically eyelid surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, either independently or together, to widen the eye and give the patient a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. However, it can be difficult to even see the eyes if the forehead and brows have grown heavy and begun to sag. In many cases, a forehead lift, or brow lift, can help minimize deep forehead wrinkles, frown lines, brow furrows, and sagging eyebrows by tightening the skin and muscles of the upper third of the face. The combination of a forehead lift and blepharoplasty can make the face appear much younger and more vibrant.
Finishing with a Facelift
A facelift is considered by many to be the ultimate solution to facial aging. By removing and tightening sagging skin in order to eliminate the wrinkles and droopy areas of the face, a facelift can often create a long-lasting youthful appearance. However, even after a facelift, the process of facial aging will continue. Nothing can stop the skin from slowly losing volume and elasticity, and this may cause the results of a facelift procedure to diminish over time, particularly in patients who received facelifts at younger ages. Fortunately, there are many different non-invasive maintenance procedures that can help forestall the effects of facial aging and maintain facelift results longer. I often recommend Botox® Cosmetic to help alleviate the facial wrinkles that can result from shifting facial expressions, and the loss of facial volume can be addressed using volumetric enhancements like Juvéderm® injectable facial filler or autologous fat transfer. Both of these procedures treat the underlying causes of facial aging and wrinkles, keeping the skin looking younger longer.
