There is a common misconception that plastic surgery is a quick and easy way to keep oneself looking perpetually young and vital. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case. Nothing can permanently stop the aging process and both cosmetic facial plastic surgery procedures and non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques are much more effective when they are used together as parts of an ongoing maintenance plan. It has always been my facial rejuvenation philosophy that the best outcomes usually occur when patients adopt a gradual approach, beginning their treatment plans earlier in the aging process and only undergoing more comprehensive, surgical procedures as they become necessary. When pursuing this course, there are many things that patients can do themselves, both before and after their procedure, in order to help ensure natural looking and long-lasting results.
Before Your Plastic Surgery Procedure: Education and Preparation
When patients are unhappy with the outcome after plastic surgery, it is usually because they do not have clear and reasonable expectations or because there has been a break-down in communication. During our facial plastic surgery consultation, I will help you understand everything that you can about your procedure and give you an opportunity to examine before and after photographs of my past patients as well as computer simulated images of your own potential results so that you will have a better idea of what you can reasonably expect. You can also prepare by getting into good physical condition. Alcohol and tobacco-products can have an adverse effect on circulation, skin elasticity, and healing factors, which could potentially lead to complications during surgery or prolong your post-procedure recovery time. Any fluctuation in weight can also cause fat and tissues to shift, even in the face, and so I generally recommend that patients be at or near their ideal weight before undergoing a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure. When patients go into surgery healthy and fit, they more frequently come out happy with their results.
After Your Plastic Surgery Procedure: Proper Care and Follow-Up
Maintaining your plastic surgery results is an on-going process, and doesn’t simply end the day you leave the hospital. While healing, you should get plenty of rest, eat healthy, and avoid excessive exposure to sunlight (which can irritate healing incisions and potentially worsen scarring.) Be sure that you return for all of your scheduled follow-up appointments, so that I can closely monitor your progress and make sure that everything is progressing as it should. Most importantly, follow the instructions that I will give you after your procedure about how to care for your incisions, when to change bandages, and what medications to take and communicate with me if you have any questions or concerns. Many cases of “botched” plastic surgery procedures are actually the result of patients failing to follow these vital post-operative care instructions or because they do not bring issues promptly to their surgeon’s attention.
Down the line, you can even help prolong your plastic surgery results with various non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments, like chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, Botox®, or facial fillers. Every patient is different and requires a customized approach to address their individual areas of concern, but regardless of the treatment plan staying on top of the signs of facial aging with regular maintenance treatments is the best way to sustain natural-looking plastic surgery results.
