It is easy to get excited about all of the amazing things that can be accomplished with facial plastic surgery. More often than not, patients come to see me with a variety of areas they would like to address, and they are eager to jump in right away so they can start to see changes immediately. Unfortunately, that is not the way it works. Only very rarely can cosmetic plastic surgery procedures provide overnight improvement, and it is important for patients to understand, before undergoing any procedure, what sort of recovery process they can expect. I strongly believe that patients should always be given as much information as possible about every aspect of their procedure, because even though recovering after a plastic surgery procedure, particularly one that is as comprehensive as a full facelift, can be uncomfortable for some, patients almost always think that the discomfort was worthwhile when they see the final plastic surgery results.
Just ask Donna, our February 2016 Video Spotlight Patient. As a professional film maker, videographer, and former TV news anchor, Donna had worked with me numerous times over the years, documenting some of the cases of my previous spotlight patients. When she began to notice some of the early signs of aging in her own face, I was honored that she came to me for a personal consultation. Together we decided that Donna could benefit from a full facelift combined with a blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, to remove the excess, sagging skin that was causing wrinkles and making her look older than she felt. Because Donna has a thinner face, I would complete the procedure by using fat transfer techniques to restore lost facial volume and a 15% TCA chemical peel to help rejuvenate the appearance of the skin and stimulate collagen production. More importantly, Donna decided that she would document her entire recovery in pictures and video in order to help me give my patients a true, behind-the-scenes glimpse of just what happens while one is recovering from facial plastic surgery. You can see the results we accomplished here:
Every patient is unique, and an individual’s plastic surgery recovery time and experience will undoubtedly vary considerably depending upon the specific procedures performed and the specific idiosyncrasies of the patient’s own physiology. However, the videos of Donna’s recovery provide valuable insights for patients considering any plastic surgery procedure.
