Surgery of the Ears / Reconstructive Otoplasty
Because the ears act as both an aesthetic and functioning organ, it is important to have a surgeon who specializes in surgery of the ears or otoplasty. Oftentimes, congenital disorders like prominent ears in which the ears appear to stick out from the head unnaturally far, constricted ear or “cup ear” where the patient’s ears are abnormally small, or microtia where the majority of the external ear is missing require reconstructive surgery to correct.
For ears that stick out further than normal, patients often cannot wear glasses or hearing aids if necessary and surgery is necessary to reconstruct the ear to bend correctly. In cases of microtia, Dr. Burstein reconstructs the ear to a more natural shape and position using the patient’s own cartilage (taken from the ribs) to restore both the look and function of the ear.
