Cleft Lip Surgery
Cleft lip surgery is most often a pediatric reconstructive surgery to correct this congenital defect. Cleft lip surgery targets more than just the lip. In fact, it focuses on the muscles around the lip and nose to restore function as well as appearance. The first cleft lip surgery is usually performed within the first three months of the child’s life. The initial surgery may be followed by other surgeries to fully restore function and appearance. Some cleft lip patients also have a cleft alveolus, or a split in the bone that holds the teeth in place, as well, but this is usually addressed when the patient is about eight years of age.
