Fernando Burstein MD, Facial Plastic Surgeon

Our May spotlight patient, Chris, is always on the go. Originally from New York, he has travelled around the world since college living almost everywhere including the west coast, England, and Japan. Now settled in the U.S. with an IT company, Chris maintains his breakneck speed with three daughters, a racecar, and motorcycle driving hobby. Before seeing Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. Fernando Burstein, though, his fast-paced lifestyle was interrupted by his sleeping habits.

“I wasn’t sleeping because I couldn’t breathe well at night,” says Chris. Between football and wrestling during his youth, he had broken his nose multiple times resulting in a deviated septum that blocked his airways. Chris’s girlfriend convinced him to look into having his nasal passages reconstructed so he’d be able to breathe and sleep better.

Chris admits he was very apprehensive about his reconstructive rhinoplasty surgery, “I’d never been under anesthesia before and wasn’t sure what the final results would look like.” Dr. Burstein and his medical team worked to ensure Chris felt comfortable going into the procedure, answering all his questions thoroughly and giving him the specialized attention and care they give each patient. “You feel like you’re getting special treatment,” says Chris.

After the surgery, Chris says he recovered quickly and is pleased with his natural-looking rhinoplasty results. His number one priority—sleeping better—was achieved through the surgery as he is now able to breathe throughout the night without interruptions. He’s happy with his results on a personal level, as well, “You look in the mirror and you like what you see better than you did before… I’m really glad I did it.”

dr. fernando burstein cleft patientNatalie has been in surgery more times in her young life than most people do their whole lives. Born with a cleft lip and palate, Natalie has undergone multiple procedures from birth to help remedy the congenital disorder. After moving to the United States from England, her parents found Dr. Burstein—who came highly recommended. He worked along with a team of surgeons on her initial cleft palate reconstruction. When she was 16, Natalie and Dr. Burstein discussed the changes she wanted to accomplish and a potential final surgery. However, her parents were worried that her facial features would change as she grew, and decided to hold off until she had fully matured.

Years later at her parents’ suggestion, Natalie went to see Dr. Burstein again to complete her final surgery.  She underwent a final cleft palate reconstruction including genioplasty (chin surgery) to augment her chin, which never fully developed as a result of her cleft palate, and a rhinoplasty in which cartilage from her ear was used to help reconstruct her nose.

Nowadays, Natalie spends her time working in real estate with her family’s firm and is interested in working with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to help children who have cleft palates overcome social barriers. “It’s so easy to get off track in school, especially, when you don’t have a support system like I did, which is why I’d love to work with teens with similar cleft issues so they aren’t derailed from learning.” Natalie, who understands the teasing and speech difficulties often caused by the condition, attended speech classes to help her speak normally before her surgeries.

When asked how she felt about Dr. Burstein and his medical team, Natalie can remember nothing but positive experiences. “I feel like I’ve known him all my life, and I couldn’t imagine having anyone else do my surgery.” She’s even recommended Dr. Burstein to a few friends who were interested in rhinoplasty, saying that his patients look the same, but have subtle improvements in all the areas they wanted.

Her life after the surgery is great, Natalie says. “I’ve always had a positive life, but after the surgery I feel good about myself from within. It’s nice to go on a date or drive a car and not worry about your profile.”

Dr. Burstein is highly trained in pediatric and adult reconstructive surgery and even served as the Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) at Scottish Rite from 1991 to 2001 and is currently the director of the Center for Craniofacial disorders for CHOA. dr fernando bursteinJerry, an environmental manager in Atlanta, moved from North Carolina after retiring from the military. Upset by sagging skin under the chin and a drooping brow, Jerry began considering cosmetic surgery back in October 2011. Jerry was referred by a friend to cosmetic surgeon Dr. Fernando Burstein for a consultation and found that Dr. Burstein was exactly the type of surgeon he was looking for, “Dr. Burstein and his staff were very forthcoming with everything you’d want to know. I didn’t have to ask many questions. They explain everything to you.”

Jerry underwent cosmetic rhinoplasty to reshape his nose for a more harmonious overall facial appearance, facelift and neck liposuction surgery to help tighten sagging skin under the chin and around the lower face area, and blepharoplasty surgery to eliminate drooping eyelid skin that can cause patients to look tired and have trouble seeing.

An avid SCUBA diver and sailor, Jerry is very pleased with the results of his surgery and gets plenty of compliments from his family and friends. He’s noticing a difference as well and says he feels a lot more comfortable in his own skin. Regarding his experience, Jerry says that he would most definitely consider Dr. Burstein for another cosmetic procedure due to his informative nature and the excellent care Jerry received from Dr. Burstein’s medical team. “The staff was great,” he says. “Everyone at the hospital was just superb.”

pre surgery of the faceOur February spotlight patient Judy says the women in her family have a history of round faces. However, by the time she was in her 50s, the youthfulness of her round face had faded, and she felt that her once supple skin could use a lift. Judy began considering a facelift at 50 and had her first procedure at 55. Ten years later she was ready for a second facelift, and the surgeon who performed her first procedure recommended Dr. Fernando Burstein.

After thoroughly researching her facial plastic surgery options, Judy said she felt so comfortable with Dr. Burstein that she was excited to have him perform her surgery. “He’s such a special guy. He had me so at ease and was genuinely excited about doing it. You could tell he loves his craft.” Dr. Burstein’s enthusiasm was contagious, says Judy, and she was soon looking forward to having him perform her surgery. She was also blown away by Dr. Burstein’s medical team, especially Debi, and how well they treated her.

Judy underwent a facelift, neck lift, cheek fat reduction with buccal fat pad removal, and a TCA chemical peel to regain a younger-looking, more streamlined appearance. When asked how she felt about her facelift results, Judy replies that she couldn’t be happier. Two weeks after her surgery, she walked by a full-length mirror at a dress shop and caught a glimpse of herself, “I had never been so happy in my life. I was beautiful; my face had an oval shape to it.”

Her favorite part of the experience was being able to meet and get to know Dr. Burstein who she describes as “absolutely wonderful.” Judy says that at her first follow-up appointment a week after surgery Dr. Burstein was able to see past the swelling and bruising to the end result and knew it was going to go well. That know-how and confidence struck her, “It made a lot of difference to have HIM excited to see my results, as well.”

Nowadays, Judy says her life is back to normal, but that she’s much happier when she looks in the mirror and enjoys putting on makeup. “It makes you feel good when you look good,” she says.

Atlanta facial plastic surgeonAtlanta facial plastic surgeonOriginally from Greece, Amal now lives in Florida. She first met Dr. Burstein when she accompanied one of her three children to Atlanta for his rhinoplasty consultation. Amal and her son were referred to Dr. Burstein by a doctor in their hometown who knew Dr. Burstein very well and was even a student of his at Emory. Although Amal had considered having nose surgery for many years to correct breathing problems, she intended to only discuss her son’s prospective procedure.

An expert in the natural contours of the face, Dr. Burstein knew by seeing Amal’s nose that her breathing likely suffered. He asked her about it and took a look at it when she concurred that she indeed had trouble breathing through her nose. After talking with Dr. Burstein, Amal decided to undergo nasal reconstruction.

Dr. Burstein reconstructed Amal’s nose inside and out first to fix her breathing obstruction and functionality and then to restore her nose aesthetically. Amal said this procedure was the “best thing I’ve ever done.” She’s thrilled with her nose surgery results. She can breathe much better while she’s awake, and her daughter even brought it to her attention that she breathes better in her sleep as well—no more snoring!

Amal described Dr. Burstein and his staff as “amazing” and would go back to Dr. Burstein if she needed additional surgery. She says her life is back to normal now, and people don’t even notice that she’s had something done to her nose because of Dr. Burstein’s devotion to natural-looking plastic surgery results.

Amal highly recommends Dr. Burstein to other prospective patients and offers this advice: “Make sure to do your research.” She said that when it comes to something as serious as plastic surgery, it’s more than looks that count—what’s on the inside is just as important as what’s on the outside, so be sure to look for a reputable board certified plastic surgeon.

Former spotlight patient Sandy chose Dr. Fernando Burstein to perform her facial plastic surgery after nearly two years of careful consideration.  As an artist who wanted to age gracefully, Sandy decided on Dr. Burstein because of the natural and conservative plastic surgery results he produced. She also appreciated that he was board certified in both plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as head and neck surgery, and limits his practice to plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face. Sandy is pleased with her facelift results. Watch her video to learn more about her experience with Dr. Burstein.

Atlanta native Katie first met Dr. Burstein before she could remember. As a pediatric reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Burstein was on the team of surgeons that helped repair the cleft lip Katie was born with. As an adult, Katie began contemplating cosmetic surgery for herself, hoping to reshape her nose. This time last year she decided to take the leap and seek plastic surgery again.

Katie’s mother recommended that she look into Dr. Fernando Burstein who helped perform her cleft lip reconstruction an infant. After research and consultations, Katie found that Burstein’s surgical recommendations fit her cosmetic goals: “As an adult going in for surgery, it’s not the same as when I was a child. When I was young, everyone focused on fixing the issue, but as an adult, Dr. Burstein looked at my whole face.”

Though she went into her consultation interested in nose reshaping, Dr. Burstein recommended that Katie consider chin surgery (genioplasty) as well to help her achieve her desired aesthetic. She is so glad she followed Dr. Burstein’s suggestions. Katie underwent cleft nasal reconstruction, cleft lip revision, genioplasty, and neck liposuction.

Before going into surgery, Katie says she read things on the internet about plastic and reconstructive surgery that scared her and made her expect the worst, but her experience with Dr. Burstein put all her fears to rest. “Obviously in a good surgeon’s hands, it’s not as bad as I read about. My overall experience was good.” Katie says her surgery went smoothly and that she was even eating solid food like noodles on the same day. When asked, Katie said she would definitely consider Dr. Burstein for another surgery.

An artist and online merchant , Katie is very pleased with her results from Dr. Burstein. In fact, the results she likes most are the suggestions Dr. Burstein made in addition to her nose reshaping, especially the genioplasty which she feels balances her profile.

Harrell also notes that there wasn’t much information available for adults who may be interested in cleft palate and lip revision surgery, and that she would definitely recommend Dr. Burstein for his informative nature and ability to walk prospective patients through the procedures.

November Spotlight Patient

Christopher spends a lot of his time “plugged in” to technology.  His mother Gloria describes him as “talented with tech gadgets” and “very gifted with computers.” Christopher likes to spend his free time developing applications for the iPhone and just got a new synthesizer to work on creating techno music. Judging from his confidence and abilities now, you’d never know Christopher underwent a rhinoplasty to repair a deviated septum and a chin surgery (genioplasty) to balance his profile this summer.

Since he was young, Christopher had trouble breathing, often woke up his family with his loud snoring, and had even started complaining about a constant itching in his nose.  His pediatric ear, nose, and throat specialist recommended Dr. Fernando Burstein to help him with his breathing problems.

Christopher mother was hesitant at first to have her son undergo cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.  However, Dr. Burstein’s easygoing, comforting personality and his use of the latest before and after computer imaging technology convinced them that the procedures would benefit Christopher. During the initial consultation, Christopher mother says that Dr. Burstein confirmed that when Christopher took a breath, air was only entering through one side of his nose, and that as he grew, Christopher’s deviated septum would continue to impede his breathing.

Christopher and his family were also impressed with Dr. Burstein’s bedside manner and caring staff.  They understood the importance of catering to both Christopher and his parents. Gloria, Christopher’s mom, says that Dr. Burstein showed “great bedside manner, perfect for a teenager.” Gloria especially loved the time Lisa, Dr. Burstein’s administrative assistant, took to explain what insurance would cover and how payments would be mapped out. Says Gloria about Dr. Burstein’s office and staff, “It’s just a good place to go.”

While the healing process was trying for Christopher, both he and his family are happy with his results. His mother says that while his personality has not changed, the results have helped his self-image and confidence. In fact, the results look so natural and the surgery went so well, that sometimes even Christopher himself forgets about his surgery; although his family happily acknowledges Christopher’s lack of snoring! Most of Christopher’s friends notice a difference, but can’t tell exactly what changed.

Christopher’s family were so pleased with him results that they have already recommended Dr. Burstein to a friend who is suffering the same breathing problems Christopher was. Gloria  is thankful her pediatric ENT specialist recommended Dr. Burstein: “You have to trust who you’re with. When you’re dealing with someone’s face you’ve really got to know. I felt like [Christopher] was in great hands.”
