How long do results from Ultherapy® last?

Because Ultherapy® stimulates collagen production within the treatment area, results last longer than most other non-invasive skin tightening treatments. While Ulthera® does not stop skin and tissue from aging, patients can expect to see results for up to a year. Annual touch-up treatments can help patients keep up with the aging process.

What does Ultherapy® Non-Surgical Facelift feel like?

While the sensation varies from patient to patient, many describe a brief prickling or heat sensation under the skin. This occurs when the ultrasound energy is delivered to the treatment area(s). My medical staff and I work to provide our patients with the most comfortable treatment experience. While comfort levels differ among patients, full anesthesia is not necessary during and Ultherapy® treatment. However, a topical anesthetic and oral pain medicines may be used to ensure patient comfort.

Am I a candidate for Ulthera®?

Individuals who are experiencing mild to moderate sagging in the face and upper neck are excellent candidates for Ulthera®. While Ulthera® Non-Surgical Facelift works to tighten the same tissues that are repaired during facelift surgery, it is not a replacement for surgery in individuals with more advanced signs of aging. Contact our office to schedule your consultation to see if Ulthera® could benefit you.

How many Ulthera® treatments will I need to see results?

The number of treatments needed varies based on the patient’s skin condition, desired outcome, and other factors. Most Ultherapy® patients see good clinical results with just one treatment. A follow-up visit can be scheduled to track your progress and take before and after photographs; patients who desire additional refinement may choose to have a secondary treatment at this time.

In the age of the internet, rumors about skincare, wrinkle prevention, and reduction are rampant. While there is no real fountain of youth, there are effective ways to reduce the signs of aging and delay their onset! Learn the truths below:

Myth: Just like you exercise your body, you should exercise your face to prevent wrinkles.

While exercising your facial muscles may help to improve the muscle tone of your neck, repeated facial expressions may actually be the culprit of wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. Just think about the crow’s feet and nasolabial folds that develop from years of smiling and the furrows between your brows from worrying or scowling. Hence, the idea behind exercising facial muscles doesn’t work in the same way it works for our bodies.

For those with fine lines and wrinkles, injectables like Botox® and Dysport® can help relax the muscles in the forehead and eyebrows that cause frown lines and forehead wrinkles. Meanwhile, facial fillers like Restylane® and Juvéderm® help fill areas around the mouth and nose to smooth deeper folds and creases.

Myth: Eating large quantities of fish like salmon and tuna will prevent the signs of aging.

Eating the recommended amount of omega-3 fatty acids beneficial for your skin as well as your heart, and those healthy fats can be found in fish like salmon. However, just as with any other type of food, fish should be eaten in moderation. Women who are pregnant or who are trying to get pregnant may not benefit from the higher levels of mercury found in some types of fish. Instead of focusing on the amount of oily fish you eat for improved skin health, focusing on preventative measures like wearing sunscreen are often more effective steps toward avoiding signs of aging.

Ulthera® Non-Surgical Facelift is another option which strengthens your skin from within and promotes collagen production while lifting and tightening the face. Individuals whose skin seems damaged and dull may benefit from laser skin resurfacing  performed with Matrix RF™ Fractional skin resurfacing  removesdead and damaged tissue from the surface of the skin to smooth wrinkles and give you a dewy, youthful complexion.  A chemical peel may also help to rejuvenate your skin with minimal downtime.

Myth: Using a tanning bed is safer than sunbathing outdoors because you can control the amount of sun you get.

FDA advisory panels have been contemplating tougher regulations on tanning beds because they have been so closely linked with increased risk of deadly melanoma afterward. No amount of unprotected sun exposure, real or artificial, is safe for the skin. Along with a drastic increase in your chance of developing melanoma, unprotected UV ray exposure speeds up the skin’s aging processes and breaks down the skin’s supportive structures, expediting the wrinkling process and increasing the chances of hyperpigmentation and other signs of aging.

If you’re looking to reverse more advanced signs of aging like sagging skin and drooping eyelids, cosmetic surgery procedures like facelift and eyelid surgery can refresh your appearance for subtle and natural-looking rejuvenation.

If you’ve been looking to try Ultherapy® Non-Surgical Facelift but haven’t made the time to visit our office, now’s the time to set aside an evening for yourself. Thursday, February 2nd from 6-8pm Atlanta Plastic Surgery and AYA Medical Spa will host an Ultherapy® Open House at our Northside location (975 Johnson Ferry Road, NE, Suite 100, Atlanta, Georgia 30342).

Ultherapy® uses ultrasound technology to tighten loose skin eliminating jowls, sagging brows, and “turkey neck.” The older we get, the slower our bodies produce collagen. The sound waves used in Ulthera® penetrate the skin, producing a gentle heat that encourages collagen production for extended results. For more info, check out our Ulthera® FAQ blog.

Patients who attend the event will receive

- Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments
- An opportunity to consult with a certified Ulthera® representative or Atlanta Plastic Surgery provider about the treatment
- Entrance into a raffle for a customized Obagi Nu-Derm® package ($400 value)

When you think of dermal injectables, you probably think first about facial rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction since that is their main use. Facial fillers and cosmetic injectables are a great solution for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Patients who have had cosmetic surgery procedures like facelift or brow lift in the past may also use facial fillers and injectables to refresh their plastic surgery results.

Although terms like Botox®, Dysort®, and Juvèderm® are often used interchangeably, there is a difference. Cosmetic injectables like Botox® and Dysport® are purified forms of the botulinum toxin and work by relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles. This type of injectable is inserted into the brow and around the eyes. Facial fillers, such as Juvèderm®, Restylane®, and Perlane® are made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally occurring in youthful human collagen and may be injected into deep wrinkles and areas of lost volume over time like the cheeks, but that’s not all.

Last spring, Restylane® was approved by the FDA for lip enhancement for patients 21 and older with a 6-0 panel vote with one abstention. Traditionally used to fill deep wrinkles and areas of lost volume, Restylane® is the first and only facial filler approved by the FDA for lips.

There are various reasons a person would choose to augment their lips by adding volume. Older patients love the youthfulness the added volume brings to their lips, while younger patients may look to Restylane® to create greater facial proportion. Other patients may choose Restylane® for a better defined lip border that you just can’t get with lipstick and liner.

As a double board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Fernando Burstein is very familiar with the natural contours of the face and understands that proportion is the key to any facial plastic surgery procedure. If you’re interested in lip augmentation with Restylane® or another plastic surgery procedure, be sure to find a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in that particular treatment or procedure. What is the Ulthera Non-Surgical Facelift?

Completely innovative, Ultherapy® is the latest in non-surgical skin tightening technology. Used on the face and neck, Ultherapy® utilizes ultrasound waves to tone, tighten, and lift sagging skin that often ages us beyond our years. The treatment takes 30 minutes to an hour and requires little to no recovery time. Ulthera® is often referred to as the non-surgical facelift.

How does Ultherapy® work?

As we grow older the production of collagen in the deeper layer of our skin slows down, leaving us with thinner skin and areas of sagging and drooping under the chin and on the face. Ulthera® works using ultrasound energy to penetrate the skin, heating the deeper layers of tissue below the skin’s surface. The process stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. This method of treatment leaves the surface layers of the skin intact, decreasing recovery time compared to ablative laser procedures, and improves the skin from the inside out.

How is Ultherapy® different from other cosmetic skin tightening procedures?

Both non-surgical and non-invasive in nature, Ulthera® is the only skin tightening system to utilize ultrasound technology which allows the provider to “see” into the deep tissue responsible the appearance of aging and to target the tissues previously only accessible to Dr. Burstein with neck lift, facelift, and other cosmetic surgery procedures.

Q.) Why is my own tissue better than implants for facial plastic surgery?
A.) By using your own tissue during facial plastic surgery like chin augmentation (genioplasty), cheek augmentation, or lip augmentation, your risk of surgical complications like rejection and infection are greatly reduced. Also, by using materials inherent to your biology, the cosmetic results tend to be much more subtle and natural looking than those created through implantable devices.

Q.) Will my plastic surgery results be as good using my own fat or tissue as they would with implants?
A.) Although circumstances may dictate the use of an implant, the reason I prefer to work with naturally occurring tissues during facial plastic surgery is because they typically yield more aesthetically pleasing and natural looking results. I have found that with a majority of facial rejuvenation and facial reconstruction patients that naturalness in appearance really is a key factor in patient satisfaction.

Q.) Is there anything non-surgical that can help my skin look significantly tighter and more youthful?
A.) There are a variety of minimally invasive cosmetic treatments available for facial rejuvenation. Some of the most popular remain Botox® and Dysport® injections to relax the wrinkle causing muscles between and around the eyes and Juvèderm® and Restylane® facial fillers to re-plump areas of lost volume around the mouth and nose that thin with age-related collagen degradation. Chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing treatments like the ones available through AYA Medical Spa are excellent treatments to minimize the appearance of coloration and texture issues from sun damage, hormonal changes, and skin conditions like rosacea that can occur with age. There are also ultrasound powered treatments that can be used to stimulate your body’s ability to produce collagen. It’s best to receive an expert skin analysis to decide which treatment will target your concerns most effectively.

Q.) Will my post-plastic surgery downtime be shorter because you use natural materials for enhancement?
A.) Because the natural materials used minimize the risk of developing surgical complications, the downtime associated with facial plastic surgery may be shortened; however, it’s still important to adhere to all of your plastic surgeon’s prescribed aftercare instructions and attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure that you are healing properly. Proper recovery and complication prevention are keys in avoiding secondary facial plastic surgery like revisionary rhinoplasty.
