A study recently published in the journal Cell shows a link between environmental and genetic factors that cause congenital defects. Researchers from around the world including Australia, Japan, Canada, and the United States, link “nature” and “nurture” in the formation of birth defects involving the spine, organs, brain, craniofacial regions, and more.

Researchers found that hypoxia, a period of low levels of oxygen in-utero, along with genetic risk factors like having only one copy of a gene increase the chances a child will develop congenital scoliosis. Those involved in the study say this connection isn’t a far stretch for other congenital disorders as well including cleft lip and cleft palate.

Hypoxia during pregnancy can be caused by many factors including smoking, high altitudes, prescription drugs, and poor control of sugar levels in diabetics. Sally Dunwoodie, head of Embryology Laboratory at the Victor Chang Cardiac research Institute in Australia says that “the combination of genetic risk as well as exposure to low oxygen” instead of just the genetic risk alone meant patients were 10 times more likely to develop congenital disorders.

Though this development requires more research to link to craniofacial disorders, it is an important step in the right direction for scientists studying congenital disorders. Not only does it mean we have answers as to why certain children develop these traits, but it also means we can revise protocol for pregnant women to reduce congenital defects in their children.

In children, cleft lip and cleft palate can result in trouble eating and speaking without impediment. Surgeries for this condition begin at a young age and continue until about 18 years old, until the facial bones have fully developed. Being able to prevent even some cases is a beneficial addition to medicine.

If you’ve been looking to try Ultherapy® Non-Surgical Facelift but haven’t made the time to visit our office, now’s the time to set aside an evening for yourself. Thursday, February 2nd from 6-8pm Atlanta Plastic Surgery and AYA Medical Spa will host an Ultherapy® Open House at our Northside location (975 Johnson Ferry Road, NE, Suite 100, Atlanta, Georgia 30342).

Ultherapy® uses ultrasound technology to tighten loose skin eliminating jowls, sagging brows, and “turkey neck.” The older we get, the slower our bodies produce collagen. The sound waves used in Ulthera® penetrate the skin, producing a gentle heat that encourages collagen production for extended results. For more info, check out our Ulthera® FAQ blog.

Patients who attend the event will receive

- Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments
- An opportunity to consult with a certified Ulthera® representative or Atlanta Plastic Surgery provider about the treatment

Former spotlight patient Sandy chose Dr. Fernando Burstein to perform her facial plastic surgery after nearly two years of careful consideration.  As an artist who wanted to age gracefully, Sandy decided on Dr. Burstein because of the natural and conservative plastic surgery results he produced. She also appreciated that he was board certified in both plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as head and neck surgery, and limits his practice to plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face. Sandy is pleased with her facelift results. Watch her video to learn more about her experience with Dr. Burstein.

When you think of dermal injectables, you probably think first about facial rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction since that is their main use. Facial fillers and cosmetic injectables are a great solution for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Patients who have had cosmetic surgery procedures like facelift or brow lift in the past may also use facial fillers and injectables to refresh their plastic surgery results.

Although terms like Botox®, Dysort®, and Juvèderm® are often used interchangeably, there is a difference. Cosmetic injectables like Botox® and Dysport® are purified forms of the botulinum toxin and work by relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles. This type of injectable is inserted into the brow and around the eyes. Facial fillers, such as Juvèderm®, Restylane®, and Perlane® are made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally occurring in youthful human collagen and may be injected into deep wrinkles and areas of lost volume over time like the cheeks, but that’s not all.

Last spring, Restylane® was approved by the FDA for lip enhancement for patients 21 and older with a 6-0 panel vote with one abstention. Traditionally used to fill deep wrinkles and areas of lost volume, Restylane® is the first and only facial filler approved by the FDA for lips.

There are various reasons a person would choose to augment their lips by adding volume. Older patients love the youthfulness the added volume brings to their lips, while younger patients may look to Restylane® to create greater facial proportion. Other patients may choose Restylane® for a better defined lip border that you just can’t get with lipstick and liner.

As a double board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Fernando Burstein is very familiar with the natural contours of the face and understands that proportion is the key to any facial plastic surgery procedure. If you’re interested in lip augmentation with Restylane® or another plastic surgery procedure, be sure to find a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in that particular treatment or procedure. While most people assume that the terms plastic and cosmetic surgery denote the same set of procedures, the truth is the two terms are actually not synonymous. Though most people use them interchangeably, plastic surgery is an umbrella term that encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

The term “plastic surgery” is derived from the Greek plastikos which means “able to be molded.” Nowadays it’s the branch of surgery that repairs, remodels, and/or restores parts of the body. This includes surgery to change parts of the body to achieve cosmetic goals as well as surgery to restore function to body parts.

Surgery that is used to help a person achieve his or her desired look is called cosmetic surgery. Procedures that enhance certain body parts fall into this category. A facelift is an example of a cosmetic surgery procedure because it helps to give the patient a younger-looking appearance but does not work to repair any problems a patient may have with the function of any facial features. Dr. Burstein’s February 2010 Spotlight Patient, Sandy Milton, underwent a facelift to freshen her look and reach her cosmetic goals.

Reconstructive surgery also falls under the plastic surgery umbrella. Because Dr. Burstein specializes in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology, he performs many reconstructive surgeries on patients who may suffer from congenital disorders or who have experienced an accident or trauma that may have caused an issue with breathing, eating, speaking, etc. Jordan Smith, our October Spotlight Patient, was born with a cleft lip and palate which Dr. Burstein has worked, through multiple reconstructive surgeries, to repair so that Jordan can speak and eat normally.

Some plastic surgery procedures work both as cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. For example, our November Spotlight Patient, Christopher Jones, suffered from a deviated septum which caused him trouble breathing. Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, helped him regain the function of his nose so he was able to breathe again and also worked to balance his facial profile for a more aesthetically pleasing look.

Although most surgeons will know what you’re talking about when you say plastic surgery and explain what your goals for surgery are, it’s still an important distinction for patients and potential patients when you’re researching your prospective procedure(s) and surgeon, regardless of what surgery you are interested in undergoing.
